A veteran dance educator of 23 years, Freddie Lee strives to keep dance current, relevant to the needs of his students while still advancing their technique development. He teaches at Ligon GT Magnet Middle School and has developed a new curriculum for Wake County Public Schools including Swing Dance, Dance In the Media, Video Dance, and Twist and Tone. His school tap company, Tapestry, has performed across NC including Magnet Schools of America Conference, NC Education Ball, Dance Showcase, and Pieces of Gold. He has taken Tapestry to New York City many times and has developed a working relationship with the Radio City Rockettes, who conduct yearly workshops with his students.
In addition to teaching and serving as department chair at Ligon, Freddie-Lee is an instructor at the North Carolina Dance Institute. He has 3 dance groups made up of ladies over the age of 55- the Star Strutters, Sassy Classics and the Senior Strutters that confirm his belief that you must never stop learning and dance has the power to affect positive change. As a free-lance choreographer, he works across NC for a variety of groups including Raleigh Little Theatre, Neuse Regional Theatre and Cape Fear Regional Theatre. He is a National Board Certified teacher in Physical Education and through this process it has given him a new lease on teaching and the value of process over product.
Freddie-Lee has won many awards for teaching including Teacher of the Year at Ligon-2001, Disney's American Teacher Awards Finalist-2001, Disney's Helping Hand Award for Creativity in the Classroom Finalist-2004, Dance Association of NC Educators Middle School Teacher of the Year 2005 and K-12 Teacher of the Year-2005.
