In addition to evening classes in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and hip-hop, North Carolina Dance Institute offers a variety of summer performance workshops, intensives, and dance camps for children and teens of all levels. Registration began March 3. Payment should be submitted at the time of registration. Camp costs are shown for each camp and the annual NCDI $20 registration fee may apply. Refunds can be issued up to 2 weeks prior to the start of any camp, intensive, or summer session classes. Please fill out a Summer Registration Form and submit payment when registering. Online registration is also available. Our summer camps fill quickly - register early to reserve your spot!

Summer Showcase Intensive
Dance and Perform This Summer!

2004 Summer Dance Explosion bows

The 2007 Summer Showcase Intensive is a two-week intensive summer dance camp that culminates in a live theatrical dance production. This Summer Showcase Intensive will include high-energy choreography by Kirstie Spadie and emerging choreographers from NC School of the Arts. It is a great performance opportunity for NCDI dancers and open to other dancers in our community. See photos from the 2006 Summer Showcase (and pictures from 2004 and 2005 performances). Acceptance is by audition only.

AUDITIONS: Auditions will be held Sunday, April 22 and Sunday, May 20.

Summer Showcase Intensive
Time: June 18-30 (Mon-Fri). Performance: Saturday, June 30, 7:00pm

Summer Ballet Intensives

Ballet Summer Ballet Intensives are very popular at NCDI. The Classical Ballet Intensive with Max Baud is a concentrated program for the serious ballet student. The Contemporary Ballet Intensive with Jennifer James-Rhoades will explore technique and choreography. The Children’s Ballet Intensive will inspire the young dancer and it culminates in a special performance for the parents at NCDI. Ballet Basics provides a great introduction or review of ballet fundamentals. Required attire includes black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers. Hair should be worn in a bun. NCDI encourages all students who wish to be in higher placement classes for the fall semester to participate in a ballet intensive. Ballet intensives are for the beginner to the serious minded ballet student and strive to develop the complete dancer.

Classical Ballet Intensive with Pennsylvania Ballet’s Maximilien Baud
Max Baud, former Carolina Ballet dancer and current professional dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet, leads the Classical Ballet Intensive for the serious student. Max brings a professional level workshop/intensive to NCDI each summer. Max will be creating new choreography for NCDI. Students should come prepared for a packed week of technique and choreography. Please bring a healthy snack. Classical ballet attire is required (black leotard and pink tights), with hair worn in a bun. The intensive concludes with a performance at NCDI on Friday, July 27, 4:00pm.

Level: Intermediate/Advanced (3-4 yrs ballet experience required)

Contemporary Ballet Intensive
Ms. Jennifer James-Rhoades leads the Contemporary Ballet Intensive for the dancer who loves to move and has a serious dedication to dance training. Please bring a healthy snack. Classical ballet attire is required (black leotard and pink tights), with hair worn in a bun.
Time: July 16-20 (Mon-Fri) 2:00pm-4:00pm
Ages: 11-17 yrs
Level: Intermediate/Advanced (3-4 yrs ballet experience required)
Acceptance is subject to approval. Non-NCDI students are required to take a placement class during spring semester. Please e-mail Kirstie for information.

Children's Ballet Intensive
This fun ballet camp for children 6-9 yrs will cover ballet fundamentals and stagecraft exploration with stage make-up and costumes. “Degas and the Little Dancers”, an original ballet for children, will be presented in a showcase for parents at NCDI on Friday, July 13 at 11:30am. Any color leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers are required. Please provide a mid-morning snack and a juice box for your child. Costumes will be provided by NCDI.

Ballet Basics Intensive II
The Ballet Basics Intensive II is a fast-paced review of ballet fundamentals and proper body placement. Students will explore dance combinations that travel through space and learn choreography. This camp is designed for the student who has some knowledge of ballet fundamentals and wants to further their knowledge in a fast-paced week of study.

Pre-Pointe Primer
PointeGet your feet ready for the fall semester! Our Pre-Pointe Primer takes the student through all the steps needed for starting pointe. Professionally guided by our Classical Ballet Mistress, the camp includes strengthening exercises, pointe shoe purchasing, sewing, and foot care. NCDI recommends that all advancing ballet students take this informative primer. Pointe shoes are not required.

Conditioning for Dancers

Masters of Tap An intensive workshop focused on toning the dancers body. This high-energy training session with an intense ballet barre, abdominal conditioning and fast-paced jazz combinations to get your body back in shape.

Broadway Bound Workshop

Maggie's jump Broadway bound? You need training in singing, acting and dancing! Chasta Hamilton leads a packed workshop of the “Triple Threat” techniques. Learn Broadway dance and vocal numbers from "Cats", "Dreamgirls", and "Fame". Guests from the professional industry discuss getting a talent agent, headshots/resumes, and vocal training. The Broadway Bound Workshop will cover important topics such as auditioning techniques and what it takes to make it in show business.

Creative Arts Dance Camps

PlayDance North Carolina Dance Institute offers an imaginative and creative arts camp for 3-5 yrs. Children will dance along with their favorite fairy tales and create dance-related artistic crafts. Each fun-filled day will consist of a 45-minute dance class, a creative reading, snack break, and followed by the completion of their very own artwork. All craft materials, costumes and snacks are supplied by NCDI. Pink leotards, skirts, tights, and leather ballet slippers are required for Creative Arts Dance Camp. This is an inspiring summer camp experience for the budding young artist who loves to dance! Only 10 students permitted.

Summer Dance Camp The High School Musical Dance Camps are fun-filled dance camps designed for the beginner or minimally experienced student. Young dancers will explore choreography from the popular movie in this action-packed week of dance moves and singing. Please provide a snack for your dancer. “Bop to the Top” and sign up now!
